In this episode, Eric, Alberto, and Amanda (the team mental health consultant) thoroughly examine body dysmorphia. The group discuss what it is, who it affects, and what you can do if you’re suffering from it.
How can someone manage behaviors that have both negative and positive roles in their life? Why does someone continue to do something they don’t want to do? How can visualization be helpful? How can one’s attitudes affect the length of their bodybuilding career?
The answers to these, plus many more questions related to body dysmorphia are covered in today’s episode. If you’re a physique athlete, a coach who works with physique athletes, or you are someone struggling with body dysmorphia, give this episode a listen for some information on the subject and guidance on what you can do.

Hey 3DMJ,
I really apreciate this podcast. As a ‘low level intermediate’ lifter I’ve found myself really obsessing and checking over things like my physique, nutrition, and training a lot. I really think the hard part of all this is actually outside the gym. Lifting hard is fun and comes easy but consistent nutrition, sleep, etc. outside the gym takes more effort at least for me (also I’m vegetarian so that’s another level of nutritional regulation). I’ve recently started seeing a therapist for what I thought were pretty unrelated topics from training/bodybuilding of depression, anxiety, military service, mostly tied to relationships and other things in life. Whether or not I have clinical dysmorphia or something else I know I struggle with related thoughts and actions. Listening to Amanda and you guys discuss all these topics is very helpful. I plan to try and implement some behavioral changes like getting rid of my mirror in my room and being mentally aware of not falling into toxic thinking.

So happy you found this podcast useful. And even more glad to hear that you’re now seeing a therapist and seeking the help you deserve.
We’re truly grateful for Amanda’s presence on our team and the wisdom she’s able to share on our show.
Your planned behavioral changes and deep dives into your own feelings sound like great starting places to help you get a more relaxed handle on your lifting journey.
Thank you so much for sharing, Donald.
